It’s that time of year when newspapers report of hoards of climbers queuing up to summit Everest. But it wasn’t always like Piccadilly Circus up the mountain, and to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first conquest there are two exhibitions on in town.

The Royal Geographic Society looks at the technology and kit used to help get Hilary and Tenzing to the top, while the Oxo Tower hosts a display of photographs from the 1953 expedition.
