It might sometimes seem like we’re on Artangel’s payroll, but they keep dishing out interesting projects at a rate of knots.
US artist Mike Kelley drove a replica of his childhood home on the back of a lorry through Detroit’s Michigan Avenue and made three films about it: encountering characters from bikers and prostitutes, church officials and social workers, to addicts and heads of local industry, the trilogy provides a portrait of this fascinating and troubled city.
Normally we give video art a wide berth, but this is being shown in cinemas so we can just tell ourselves we’re going to the pictures. Artangel are screening the films in various permutations in various cinemas over the next couple of weeks, coinciding with a retrospective of Kelley’s work at MoMa in New York.
