Porto, Portugal

Portugal’s seond city has a fine topography straddling the Douro River. It’s all about the vino here – Port, naturally and all those fine reds which are created deep into the countryside along the banks of the river. With a deeply atmospheric old town and a beach nearby this is the place to come to hangout. The ice cool Casa do Conto offers a few suites and a garden – with a rolling programme of exhibitions and bite size cultural events. It might be an idea to coincide a trip with the inaugural Portuguese spin-off of the Primavera Festival which has a good line up shaping up. Whilst you’re out and about, take in Casa da Música, Porto’s concert hall designed by Rem Koolhaas. Check the modern interpretation of the classic Portuguese ceramics.

Some great city centre, river view apartments include:

We’d like to recommend the Romaneira Hotel along the Duoro River but its rather steep, and by that we’re not referring to the sloping site on one of Porto’s many hills! Rooms start at €490.
