I couldn’t walk past Sutton House again – it was high time to go in. It dates back to 1535. That makes it London’s oldest domestic dwelling. Much of the original features survive – lovely brickwork and wood panels. There are some great models of the area when it was a healthy, clean retreat away from the mire of central London. So the building stood alone , near Clapton Ponds and surrounded by fields! Nearby sits Dorleston (Dalston!). Wouldn’t that make a great name for a pub in Dalston?
